All good things must come to an end. And so at an ungodly hour this morning I arrived at Londons Heathrow Airport and back to the reality of life, the universe and looking for a job.
The first task was to get up the wilds of Cumbria for some decent home cooking and a pint of real English Ale. The first complication was finding a cash machine in the terminal that was a) working and b) actually had cash in it. Failing dismally I ended up using a credit card to by a 3.50 tube ticket to Euston. It seemed weird to be on a tube train again. Everyone was so terribly, well, British. Nobody talked, they just sat there staring into a space about five inches in front of their nose and then apologised to me when they tripped over my bag.
At Euston they then tried to charge me nearly a 100 pounds for the train fare home and I had to demand to speak to the supervisor before they would sell me the discounted ticket (at only 60 quid) for people travelling after 10.30.
The train was quite comfy when compared to travelling cattle class from Thailand and with a comfortable 15 minute wait at Preston for the connecting train to Arnside we got there 20 minutes late. Some things never change.
The next train wasn't due for an hour, so I took the opportunity to grab a bite of lunch. The food court in a nearby shopping center was offering a Thai Beef Curry and I was proudly informed by the server that she was from Thailand so it was guaranteed authentic. When I said I'd just flown in from Bangkok after spending a month there, she advised me to go for the chicken sweet and sour instead.
Suitably refreshed I returned to the station and caught the train which was running exactly on time for a change and before long I could see the hills of the Lake District in the distance and I knew that the journey was just about over. |
