Last night the Boston Red Sox broke an 86 year losing streak and won the World Series. Not surprisingly there is a bit of a party going on right now. According to news reports there have been over 35 arrests with police using percussion grenades and smoke canisters, and 44 people have been treated by medical staff.
I just wish I could be back in Boston right now.
It was in 1918 that the Red Sox last won the title. Since then jet engines, the computer, microwave ovens and sliced bread have been invented, we've fought a couple of wars-to-end-all-wars, man has set foot on the moon, climbed Everest and worked out how program our video recorders (just in time to replace them with Tivo.). And in all this time the Sox have lost time and time again.
This has been blamed on many things, bad tactics, hopeless players and bad luck but mostly on the Curse of the Bambino after Babe Ruth was sold 1920 to the hated New York Yankees. Untill then the Yankees had never won the series, since then the Red Sox never won again. Untill today.
Reports of a sudden ice-age in Hades are currently being investigated, along with sightings of flying pigs and a bearded man in a white sheet walking through Harvard Square. |
